Are you the applicant or the sponsor? Healthcare is administered by the provinces, so it depends on which province you're in.

Every province has different rules for Healthcare for new Immigrants i.e after you get your PR and then after landing you will become PR of Canada. For example in Ontario there is waiting period of 3 months..You can apply for the Health Card the next day you land in Canada but you have to wait 3 months from the date of landing to start using the Health Card.During this time if you need to visit a doctor you need to pay from your pocket or you can go for private health care by paying monthly premium.....

hey, thanks guys ..I'm the applicant and I didn't get my PR yet, but my husband who is the sponsor just received the approval and they sent my file to my visa office for further enquiries...I'm on visitor visa and like i said i heard that once the sponsor gets the approval the applicant could apply for healthcare

So it would depend on which province you are in .. some provinces will accept a PR application that is in process plus the 3 month waiting period to extend healthcare benefits, others require you to actually have PR status.

thank you so much ..thats a good news, so i should call and ask do you have any idea about the province of Alberta ?? thanks again

The Alberta Health Care web-site says you need to submit ONE of the following with your application for AHCIP (Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan):

■Confirmation of permanent residence
■Permanent resident card
■Active work (minimum 6 months), study, or visitor* permit for Alberta or a designation as a Convention Refugee with accompanying documentation
* not all Alberta visitor permits make the permit holder eligible for AHCIP;

Perhaps a phone call is in order to explain your full situation.

thank you so much for your help, i will give them a call ASAP, thanks again :)

If you're married, Alberta usually gives healthcare regardless of whether or not you're AIP. Techincally, you need AIP, but they don't ask for it.

Your healthcare will expire on the same day as your Visitor Record, so you need to make sure that gets renewed in case it runs out before you get your PR.

If your VR happens to expire soon, they may try to tell you to come back. Make sure you have an extension in place and tell them about it.

In saskatchewan We Sent them a copy of our visitor visa, extension, AIP letter, passport, and proof of residence like utility bills or bank statement or a letter from the owner. We sent all that along with a cover letter explaining the situation situation. We were replied by asking for more supporting documents. When I called in they told me that we need to be a perminant resident befor we can get a healthcard. So I called the supervisor and wrote an email to the director explaining our situation and they asked for a printout of our ecas that shows we have an application in process and that shows the date they started processing the app, after that we were covered since three months before we applied which was the date of the visitor extension.

I would give them all the supporting documents u have and if they refuse ask to speak to a manager as it not always the case where the province doesn't allow coverage but sometime the representatives don't know how to do it. I think Alberta's rules are similar to saskatchewans and a spouse will get coverage because they are ur dependant.

Yes, definitely follow wolanila's advice and try more than once if turned down Several forum members have reported getting health care coverage from Alberta while a visitor, and a couple from Ontario also managed to. The person you are dealing with on the phone does not always know everything that is allowed, and may or may not just be a helpful person in general, so it is worth it to try contacting the office again or asking to talk to a supervisor.

thank you so much guys, i do really appreciate your help..I will follow your advice and let you know how it turns out...:) thank you so very much
oh btw i applied for extension almost 3 months ago and I haven't heard from them yet, the processing times is up to 90 days and they still working on application received one month before mine..

If you're in Calgary, Southland Registries did mine. They didn't give me any hassle (besides the lady just not wanting to work in general). The registry off Canyon Meadows Dr behind the Boston Pizza accepts married Visitors for healthcare too.

YAY, thank you so much yes I'm in Calgary..I'll try to get it done ASAP, thank you so much guys :)
