Good morning,

I would like to get your advice on having a baby in Cananda - my husband and I are planning to study in BC for a year and thereafter work in BC for another year before moving back to South Africa (our home country). I would like to find out what will happen if I were to fall pregnant during this time? Would the baby automatically get Canadian citizenship (even if we pay for all the expenses ourselves)?

Thank you!

Yes, the baby will get Canadian citizenship.
P.S. You might wanna look into total expenses as they may turn out to be a lot if you are not covered.

Plan it well and get medical insurance before you plan having a baby here in Canada.

According to http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp/infoben/eligible.html it is possible that you will be covered by health care if you are a student. Any baby born in Canada is Canadian unless the parents are diplomats.
