Hi all,
I am computer engineering student at UBC. I initially started in 2015, but later got undecided whether I wanted to go to grad school straight after undergrad or seek full time employments. I am currently doing coop/internship through our school's coop program, and plan to do 7 coop/internship work terms in software engineering. My upcoming coop/internship is at SAP (third largest software company in the world with very large presence in Vancouver) and I am interviewing at Google, Amazon and few other big tech companies in Canada for my summer internships.

I also planned to do one extra semester to do some undergrad research as well as take some grad level courses to see if grad school is a right fit for me. I talked with my school's international advising, and they said 7 coop work terms are completely legal since the condition is my coop work terms must not exceed my study terms (since computer engineering itself is a 8 term program, and every coop work term I do, its get added to my academic terms. So 7 coop work terms means I have done 15 academic terms, from which 7 would be coop terms which is less than 50% of my study terms). I am also in my school's dean list and might be eligible for trek scholarship (awarded to top 10% students in a faculty) so I think I am in a very good academic standing.

I have always studied full time (in our school's definition, taking more than 9 credits in each semester/4 month term is considered full time) and never took a break. I previously applied in 2019 to extend my study permit to 2022 November, but given my current new schedule, I need to extend it to January of 2023.

My international adviser said the chances of my renewal rejection is very low. My academic advisor at my faculty said they would do everything in their power to ensure I have the best success at getting my study permit renewal (they were very helpful last time and provided me a customized letter for my study permit extension, they told me that they would do the same now). However, since I am taking 8 years, I am a bit worried that my study permit extension might get rejected.

What can I do to improve my chances of my study permit extensions? My planning so far is to:
  • Include a letter of explanation to explain why I am taking that long (extra internships as well as taking research and grad level courses, I didn't include it last time)
  • Include my transcripts (I also didn't include them last time)
  • Provide the customized letter from my faculty explaining why I need the extension
Should I be doing anything else? Also how likely my study permit renewal will get rejected due to taking almost 8 years to graduate? Thanks

TLDR: Graduating in 8 years due to 7 internships/coop terms as well as taking extra semester to do research and possibly graduate level course. In dean's list and in good academic standing. Worried that my study permit extension application may get rejected due to taking 8 years.
