Will be moving over soon, and one of the first things i would get is a fast line for our house there. How is the internet privacy in Canada? Not trying to hack the government or anything, but lets say "hypothetically" if i wanted to enjoy downloading some Blu-Ray movie, or just wanted to be private.

safe? or do i need to setup a VPN?

Never had any issues when i lived in Sweden, USA, Britain and definitely not an issue here in Hong Kong.

I would say the same as those other countries. For obvious reasons, d/l some fine music/movies runs a risk in and of itself, but I don't think the RCMP is camping in your internet line ;)

In the USA they have successfully prosecuted many people for downloading movies and music. However compared to the overall number of people that do it, the number that are charged is super small. So the reason you didn't get caught it because its a low chance to get caught.

In Canada no ISP is private. Like the US, an ISP or separate entities can track what you download. And if a court orders an ISP to hand over the name and information of a particular user, the ISP will do it. Although the laws in Canada are much less strict than the US, and as far as I know nobody has ever been charged with illegal downloading of movies or music before. Although the government keeps mentioning they'll eventually start enforcing it more.

No worries. The RCMP/CSIS are about as likely to snoop on you as the SÄPO in Sweden. Also, Tor and similar services etc. are freely accessible, if needed. ;)

in other words, unlikely unless you try to profit from something you really shouldn't profit from :)

As far as I know, you can get away with download but sharing is not ok. I know one guy who got a threatening letter because of a downloaded film that he shared. I didn't know if he had to pay anything though.

You can check out this article: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Effort+afoot+court+Canadians+illegal+downloads/8373333/story.html from earlier this year.

As far as i know, nobody in Canada has ever had to pay anything, for sharing movies/music. The most people have gotten is a letter from ISP telling them to stop, and even that is incredibly rare. For someone to have to pay, they would need to be sued and go through the entire court process.

This guy didn't get a letter from his ISP, it was from film producer telling him that because he had shared such and such film on his computer for such and such period of time, he needed to pay them $1500 or something like that. This was several years ago. I don't think he was planning on paying it though and I doubt they would have won in court. I have no idea how they traced the film to him. I don't think he was sharing it under his full name and address which means they would have had to get the info from his ISP.

Was just going to say that too, i mean how did they trace it to him? Well, actually doing a trace like that BY a film producer is strange...
