Hi Guys,

A quick one if you go out of the country with Travel documents. How long can you stay abroad I mean maximum? And will it affect your PR process because some say no it will not, but once you obtained the PR then you need to be 2 out of 5 years within the country kindly shade some light on this.

My best,

Travel documents can only be obtained from outside of Canada (not from within Canada). A travel document allows you to re-enter Canada if you don't have a valid PR card.

Travel documents don't change anything with regards to how long you can be outside of Canada. You still have to live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years to keep your PR status. So you can be outside of Canada for a maximum of three years and still keep your PR status. However if you are outside of Canada for three straight years - then you would have to return to Canada and remain in Canada for two straight years to keep your PR status.

Hi scylla

Thanks for the info, However, I got a friend his case was recently accepted as protected person, he applied and got his travel documents here in Ottawa and went for a trip to Cuba it is possible to get one within the country even if you never had a PR.

It's a completely different story if you are a protected person and that's a completely different kind of travel document.

Are you a protected person as well? If so, it's important you mention information like that when you are posting right away so that you get the right answers. How did you get PR?

Sorry I did not know that either so I could mention it, mine was the skilled worker program. I posted this question for a classmate who does not have access to this site or the Internet, etc. I just learned yes he is a protected person so what does the rules say on this case?

thank you

The rules for keeping PR are the same for everyone. It doesn't matter if they are a protected person or not. It doesn't matter if they have a travel document or not. To keep your PR status - you must live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 years.
