Hi everyone,

Big problem. My boyfriend tried to cross the border and learned that he has a charge on his record: Failure to register a weapon. This happened earlier this year and was a mistake. He really didn't mean any harm and is a target shooter. Anyway, now he has to deal with this being on his record. We have been in a relationship for 2-3 years and it is really worrying us--- Is this going to be a major problem with him getting permanent residency down the line?

I'm so worried now and wondering if this makes him ineligible to come here. I'm so upset. ANyone with any information or ideas, please help. Thank you.

Is he waiting for trial or was he just charged and had them dropped?

The incident did not go to trial. He didn't go to jail for it, never got detained, and he had the weapon returned. But the charge is on his record as "failure to register a firearm"

IMO: Provide an explanation along with his CBC.

Agreed. He will need to declare it but an explanation should suffice. Don't think it would be a block to PR.

I believe they are only worried about convicted felons. This seems pretty minor, and given a good explanation, I do not think you should have a problem.

I feel that if it was serious enough to get questioned that heavily at the border... that we could come into major problems.. especially that anything gun related seems to be pretty serious to me. Hopefully you all are right.

Any input from the people who have seen lots of approvals/denials, would love your insight as well.

Thanks guys.

I seem to remember a concept of a charge that was never tried, being "expunged". Might be worth following up on that.
