Hey guys!

First time poster here - I lurked this forum for something that covered my question, but with no luck I figured I would just ask.

My names Jarrad, I've just been accepted into the IEC working holiday Visa & plan to spend my time in Toronto. I've received my Work permit - and to my knowledge I need to show up with a bank account with at least $2500 in it & my paperwork for insurance.

The cost for full insurance is very expensive! But my friends in Alberta said they only showed 3 months worth of travel insurance before going onto the provinces health care system. Does this apply for Ontario as well?

Just trying to get my facts together before I make the move.

Thanks in ahead!

You won't qualify for OHIP coverage (Ontario health insurance). If you want to make sure your work permit is issued without problems at the border, then you should make sure you meet all of the requirements (including having the required health insurance for the full length of your IEC).

I'm surprised your friends qualified for health insurance in Alberta. Are you sure they weren't on regular work permits rather than IECs? If so, that would explain why.

You can double check with CIC/Alberta if there is a chance you could be covered under provincial coverage. If you are sure you will be eligible then you can save on insurance by choosing a high deductible or opting for monthly payments which do not require big lump sum payments. In case you receive your provincial coverage you can just cancel your policy and receive a refund for the remaining period. (if there were no claims under the policy).

The only monthly payment plan is offered through 21st Century, you can read all the details here:
