Heres the plan....please let me know if I should change anything...thanks everyone.

I am US and he is Ca and I am semi retired

We have seen each other for 5 yrs.....me going back and forth. He has been legally seperated for 7 yrs and now getting the divorce over with.

The plan....come up for a 6 month visit......do I do anything different I usually just drive up and state I am visiting but read here about extending my visit....so do I fill out something for a 6 month visit?

A month or two get married.....send for cir....send for all the forms...get all pics and evidence together

Get medical...or should I do that before coming up

Get police/background checks....once again should I ask for these before coming up?

Get it all together....send in and if not ok.d before my 6 months ask for an extention

So please if you see anything I should do differently please advise......excited and nervous all at once
Thanks Gypsy

I suggest you do the police clearance requests before coming to Canada as they take some time. You can have your fingerprints taken at a local police department. Do not use the downloadable form from the cic website; you won't get good quality prints on regular computer paper. I would also download the forms and the guides and read through them at least once to see exactly what documents you will need (like a divorce decree or whatever) and what evidence is required to prove the relationship is genuine. It will be easier to get those things while you are still in the US.

I did the medical after I got here because the closest DMP to me in the US was still very far away and it's easy to find one in Canada.

Also, if you disclose at the border that you intend to stay 6 months, you will likely be asked to show you have ties in the states (a job, a house, etc) and that will prove you intend to return after your "visit" is over. The IO at the border may decide to allow you a shorter visit; 6 months is not guaranteed.

Good luck with your plans. Hope all goes well.

Thank you for your answer.....I am scared to death because I am leaving my job to come up there....I live with my daughter so will that be proof enough? I thought I could say I have been back and forth for 5 yrs and wanted to spend the xmas holiday together so come up end of june through the holiday....in 5 yrs we never had the holiday together. This all scares me to death since they could say no to the 6 months.
Also you said "Do not use the downloadable form from the cic website; you won't get good quality prints on regular computer paper. "
where do i get the form then? Do they send it.....sorry this is so overwhelming. Thanks for your help means alot.

I'm doing basically the same thing in June. It's ok if for some reason they don't approve for 6 months.. as long as they let you in, which they surely will. You can extend your visit once you are in Canada. Just bring proof that you have mail or something going to your daughter's address. You could also say things like you have to care for a family member. Also have proof that you have funds, like a savings account statement. You could say that about spending the holidays together.. or just say you want to visit with him for a few months during a summer holiday (that's what I plan on doing!). Lots of people are just honest and say they're waiting out their PR in Canada.

For the fingerprints, they usually have the correct fingerprint card at the facility (police station, etc). You can call ahead and make sure. There's usually a small fee associated with this, like 5 dollars or so.

I'm leaving my job and doing all of this too.. it is scary, yes, but as long as we are prepared ahead of time and know what to say, it will be ok. Search around, there are a few threads about how best to present yourself when crossing the border to wait out your PR visit.
