Get an insurance for a neonatal

Hi, I need some information. My wife is an international student, she has a private health insurance that covers the expenses of the delivery and it says it covers neonatal care for up to 40 days. Now in Quebec, international student's children are elligible for RAMQ. However it is not inmediate, so I was wondering where I can get a health insurance for the new born. I read in my wife's health insurance that it is recommendable to get a health insurance for the baby before he is born. But, I have not been able to find one, cause any of them requires that the insured people is at least 18 years old. I need help in this issue. Thanks for your help

If you have the baby here, he's Canadian by right regardless of the immigration status of your partner.

He'll have access to healthcare right away, like any other Canadian citizen.

Registering a child born in Québec
If you or the other parent are already registered with the plan as residents or temporary residents of Québec, you don't have to register your child if he or she is born in Québec. All you need to do is register your child with the Directeur de l’état civil, using the form obtained from the hospital or given to you by the midwife. The information needed for registering your child with the Health Insurance Plan and, where applicable, for the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan will be sent to RAMQ automatically. Thereafter, RAMQ will assess your child’s eligibility.

If you or the other parent are not eligible for or registered with the Health Insurance Plan at the time RAMQ receives the information from the Directeur de l’état civil to register your child, we will send you a letter asking you to contact us to assess your child's eligibility.

If your child is eligible, you will need to provide documents confirming you and your child's presence in Québec to complete registration for health insurance.

Was your wife pregnant before starting school? That usually means that she won’t have coverage.

Your child will be a citizen regardless the immigration status of both parents. If any of you are registered with the Health insurance plan then you don't have to do anything, the child will be automatically registered.

It depends on the private insurances' policy and fine prints. So she get pregnant after the insurnace been purchased and actively covered?
The child if born in Canada will be covered regardless.

Child will be covered. Contact your wife's insurance company and ask them directly about the coverage, it usually only overs if she wasn't pregnant when she got the insurance in the first place.
