Dear friends,

I called Service Ontario (by the way, if you call them and when you get the automated message, they don't tell you, but if you say Customer Service you will be directed to an agent!) I asked them about the online requesting of a Marriage Certificate (which takes 15 days to recieve compared to 6-8 weeks).

The woman confirmed that upon getting married in Ontario, it takes 8-10 weeks for your marriage license to be registered. After 8 weeks, you can follow up with them and find out the status of your registration. She also recommended that I can talk to the Officiant and see if they can mail it out immediately, and perhaps even higher priority postage. Then you can apply online at serviceontario.ca for your Marriage Certificate and recieve it in 15 days, regardless of the reason.

Hope this helps!

Thank you. What about Nova Scotia? I was thinking that you could get your Marriage Certificate pretty much right away. I wanted to apply for sponsorship of my spouse shortly after the wedding, once getting all the documents together, so that we can get things started and have less time apart, understandably.

Its not entirely true that the marriage registration takes 8-10 weeks in Ontario. Mine was registered in 2 weeks. I was impatient so I applied after 4 weeks and it was immediately processed. I wish I had applied in the 3rd week.
There have been few in this forum who got it quickly and some who were not so lucky.

The officiant has to mail it out immediately. That's the most important step.

You can actually apply for marriage certificate in 1 or 2 weeks after the wedding. If it is registered it gets processed immediately if not they process it after the registration. The fee will not go waste.

Also there have been confusions about which type of certificate your visa office requires. I submitted the certified copy ( long form ) along with marriage licence ( all photocopies ) and it was accepted.

I would recommend submitting the file size certificate as well as some VO's ask for it again.

I was married in Ontario and applied for my marriage certificate online the Monday after I got married. I received mind less than 2 weeks after my wedding date.

We got married January 17th (in halifax). I asked the officiant if I could hand deliver the notorized documents he usually mails. I delivered them on the 19th to HRM where they register it and send it to Vital Statistics (that takes about a week). On the same day (19h) we went to Access Nova Scotia and applied for our long forum through Vital Statics. We explained that we needed it ASAP and would they phone us when it was ready instead of mailing it and we would pick it up. We had in our hands on the 28th. It's do-able but every step of the way each person we dealt with looked past the normal procedure to help us.

Not so for me in Ontario . We mailed the solemnization and all the paper work express post rather than the officiant doing it. I ordered the following week after our honeymoon and it didn't arrive for 10 weeks. I called them and said it was for immigration and there reply was unless your husband is being deported or needs it to keep status in the country you have to wait for the processing time.

I sent the long form with my application.

Hey Taffy, yea it was remarkable that each person we dealt with was accommodating. Apparently I CAN be polite and charming when absolutely necessary ;D

Thank you all! And thanks Katathfx. Another Nova Scotian. I haven't met many on here at all! I really hope that I could have as much luck as you. So the long form is what I should be getting? Do I deliver the forms that the Officiant fills out to Vital Statistics? Is your spouse in the US as well?

Also Katathfx, did your spouse get their PR yet? I see it is coming up on a year since you applied. I thought it takes 6 months and 8 months at the most if you applied back then. I just heard that currently, it can take up to 10 because of backlogs. Does anyone know how long it could take? I just ask because I am living with a disability and to be here alone all that time without my spouses help will be very hard and I don't know what I will do, and he cannot be here unless he can work here, which he cannot until he gets his PR... so we were really praying for 6 months or so....

Yes, you don't see many applicants moving to this next of the woods :) Like I mentioned, the officiant let me hand deliver the marriage certificate that he notarized (along with my witnesses). It was very kind him to do that and he wasn't really comfortable doing it, but thankfully he did.

As for our application it is being process in the London Visa Office because he is from the Uk. He is here on a visitors visa waiting and we extend when it runs out. And yes we are approaching a year and no DM yet and we have been on progress since February 20th so hopefully soon :)

Ok awesome ;) well I will see if my Officiant will allow me to do it that way.

So does it make a difference which visa office the applications are being processed at? Is your husband outland or inland? Does anyone know how long it would take for someone from Missouri USA to get their PR for Nova Scotia once the applications are sent in?

Thanks.

Our visa office is London and yes Outland. Each visa office has different processing times. US applications are being processed in Ottawa, search the forum for the thread that pertains to how you want to apply. I know there is lots of threads for US citizens , as well as for Ottawa visa office, and most likely there will be on started for the month you apply pertaining to the Visa office. Good luck and enjoy the nice Hfx weather ... Finally

Ok, great, thanks, I will look those up.

Yup, finally getting actual Spring weather here. It's about time :D

Sorry to bring up an old post, but does anyone have any idea how long it takes to get a marriage certificate nowadays?
