Hi! I just want to ask if I should file a tax return... Here's a bit of info about me...

My husband has been in Canada since 2008 so there's no question, he has to file a tax return for 2010.

As for me, I arrived in Canada on February 4, 2011. I did not work back in my home country in 2010 since I was taking care of our daughter full time. Now, when I got my SIN at Service Canada they told me to apply and send in the forms for GST/HST credit as well as CCTB & UCCB. When I called CRA to follow up aftwr 3 weeks they could not give me an answer and when I gave them my SIN I was told it's still not active because I have not filed a tax return yet.

So I called the International Tax Service Office of the CRA in Ontario, I was told to file a return even if the income is zero and I just arrived in 2011.

What confuses me is that the forms that they told me to use only apply to those who are IN CANADA as of December 31, 2010. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO?

anyone? seniors?

I landed last December. I took the service of accounting services for my tax return. they will represent in my behalf to transact on CRA for my income tax matters.

I arrived last August 2010.... I applied for GST/HST tax credit late October 2010, this is for the base year 2009... I've just estimated the my income from my home country last 2009 (even if I landed 2010!)

Last January 2011 (as scheduled), they deposited money directly to my bank (as indicated in the form to do direct deposit).

**** change the dot to the real 'dot'

I didnt have a tax return yet and they gave me that check. We dont have any child yet, so I didnt bother CCTB and UUCB. It's just yesterday that I've generated my T1 and I've just mailed it this afternoon, so technically I dont have a tax return YET.

Hi isyisy, thanks for the info. I did send in the forms for the GST/HST credit, UCCB and CCTB about a week after I landed, around second week of February.

Did you get any confirmation from CRA that they got your forms? I haven't heard from them yet, question is will I hear from the- some sort of acknowledgement of receipt of my forms and supporting documents? Or do I just wait for the credits to my bank account?

Thanks again! :)

hmmmm... why not nga pala ask your husband to file for the CCTB and UUCB benefit. what I know is that one of the parent can claim it.

for as long as together kayo kasama ng mga kids... i think eligible sya to claim it... although now nga mag file sya ng tax return... ma deduct nya yun and maka kuha as a credit or a refund...

in your case, try mo yung GST/HST... kaso don't expect much especially na combined yung income... meaning, ilalagay mo din yung income ng husband mo and income mo sa pinas (let's say zero)... and if it is more than 32,000... (im pretty sure naman) then makuha mo is less than 30 CAD lang, one time lump sum. yung UUCB malaki... 100 bucks per child per month regardless of your income.

yup, maybe that's what we'll do. Anyway, medyo maganda weather so I'll just go to Service Canada and ask about it as well. They have tax volunteers there... :)
