Hello,

My husband and I just recently arrived in Canada on September 13th. He is a Canadian citizen and I'm a US citizen. His mother is terminally ill. We decided that it would be a good idea for me to apply for my permanent residency as we are considering staying here. My husband was employed by an Canadian company in the US that may want to bring him aboard in Canada after his mother passes and he can work full time.

My question is would he be able to sponsor me now, being unemployed while looking after his mom or will he have to have full time employment first?

He can sponsor you now. Make sure you apply using the outland method rather than inland.

That's good to know, I wasn't sure of the financial requirement. Thanks for letting me know there are different forms as well. I'm a little confused about the fee structure for the process as well. What I am reading is that his application for sponsorship is 75.00 CA and my application for PR is 550.00 CA is that correct?

Fees would be:
$75 Sponsorship application
$475 Principal applicant (you are the principal applicant, family class)
$490 Right of permanent residence fee
-------
$1040
