I posted this question before, but now my situation has changed.

I'm a US Citizen on a NAFTA work permit, living in Canada since 2009, and I have two children, one of which was born here in Canada.

A couple of months ago I got married to a Canadian citizen.

I'd like to apply for permanent residence as soon as possible but I keep getting conflicting information. Some say I should still apply for PR as FSW because my profession (civil engineering) would definitely qualify me. Others say I should go CEC since I have worked in Canada since 2009. Still others say I should have my wife sponsor me and my one child who was born in the US.

I looked at the processing times on Immigration Canada's website for CEC vs. Spousal Sponsorship PR applications and the difference was 13 months (CEC) compared to 43 days (sponsorship)!! On another Immigration Canada webpage it stated that the Sponsorship applications are processed faster for situations where the family/spouse being sponsored resides outside of Canada.

If anyone has any advice on which way I should apply for PR I would greatly appreciate it!!

My other issue is my time spent here in Canada under my NAFTA permit and how it would be credited towards citizenship. Everything I read has stated I would get 1/2 credit for each day I've spent in Canada under my work permit. As I have been here 5 years that would amount to roughly 900 days. I've also read that no matter how long I've been here before my PR, I still have to live in Canada a minimum of 2 years AFTER getting my PR before I can apply for citizenship.

Again, any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

You should apply family class as it's the easier option, you don't have to reside outside canada to apply Outland if you live in canada you have the choice to apply inland or Outland.

I strongly recommend applying Outland as it's a lot quicker for a US applicant than the inland process

Also the rules for citenzenship are changing soon and any time spent in canada before pr will not count, so you will have to restart the citenzenship count down again when you get your pr I believe it's 4 years
