Hello, my husband is a Canadian citizen and I am a US citizen. We will be applying for permanent residency under the family class and heard that once the initial assessment of our application is done, I can get a work permit in Canada while waiting for the rest of the application to be processed? Is this in fact true? Will it be an oper work permit for any employer? How long is the initial assessment process when applying from outside of Canada? Thank you very much for your help!

The open work permit rule only applies if you submit an inland application (i.e. from within Canada). The first stage of inland processing currently takes about 10 months.

Hey

Start reading this thread it will help you a lot :

you have to decide if your going to apply inland or outland first.

My advice APPLY OUTLAND saves you a lot of time because you can get the whole process done when applying outland compared to inland you will not even have first stage approval which allows you to apply for a work permit.

You can also apply outland while staying in Canada.

Cheers
