Hi there, My uncle lives in canada and has done for 40 odd years. his just turned 65 and works for himself can he become our sponsor at this age?

The only way to be sponsored by your uncle is to be an orphan and under 18 or if he lives in MB or SK and can sponsor you under PNP. Also one more option, if uncle is alone in Canada, not married, no relatives in Canada and no close relatives elsewhere he can sponsor like him having parents alive or children somewhere, even if they don't want to be sponsored, then he is allowed to sponsor one other close relative.

hi leon, my uncle is married and has a grown up son it was my understanding that he could sponsor us as a family (im 46 and have a common law partner and a son of 16) .

Does he live in Manitoba or Saskatchewan? If yes, then he can sponsor you under PNP. If no, then no.
