It's not mandatory for an online application. But still in general it is preferred that FOR THIS FORM only, you print, sign and scan back the signed version.
Though many people do not follow this and do get through without signatures. It is just a safer options that lawyers would suggest when you are very nit pick about application. For a paper based application, a missing sign means - application returned unprocessed being incomplete.
