For non accompanying family members like sons, daughters, etc, they ask because you may want them to join you later and want to minimize the chance of keeping your family apart later if the situation arises.
For other family members like sisters, father, etc, it could be for security check and also if you try to sponsor someone later, the information is already on file. I guess it will reduce fraud.
