Hello all,
I am a doctoral student at McGill University. My CAQ and study permit are due for renewal in Aug 2013. I am however on leave of absence for familial reasons since Jan 2013 to Dec 2013. I had returned back home but came back to Montreal thinking I would apply for renewal from within Canada. I understand that since I am not a full-time student in Fall 2013, I may not be granted CAQ starting Fall 2013 but from Jan 2014 when I resume Full-time studies (I have proof to justify my leave of absence as well as resumption of full-time status). My question is whether I would face problems with renewal if I apply for renewal from within Canada? I talked to International Student Services at McGill and they said I may have to justify why I am in Montreal if I am on leave of absence (I am not taking courses or working, so not really violating the terms of leave of absence but I am not a full-time student either). Please advise if I should apply for CAQ and study permit from within Canada or from my home country?

also, if its OK to apply for CAQ from Canada and if I can then return home to apply for study permit renewal from there.

Please advise. Hoping for a quick reply.

Thanks!
