Extending visa in canada whilst outland sponsorship underway

We have first stage approval on outland spousal sponsorship, but have now one week to extend our visitor visa's (UK passports for wife, 3 and 4 yr old). I am putting on it for reason, other - spousal sponsorship. And will provide an explanation letter with CIC printouts attached, stating we'd like to stay together until we are approved as permanent residents. Some forums have stated not to do this, as I will be denied. Anyone done this before? Or knows what i need to write?

My wife stated in her extension application that she wished to "continue visiting Canada with her husband while her PR application is being processed". The extension was granted.
