Extending stay while waiting inland sponsorship

Hey!
Basically the story is that I’m a Canadian citizen, my boyfriend is from US. We have been together for 2 years (1 year long distance). He came here July 2017, and stayed for 6 months, we extended his stay in order to reach common law status to apply for sponsorship. It got approved and he has now been here for over a year, his extended stay expires October 10,2018.
Question :
We were initially planning on sending sponsorship application with OWP on October 8. After some reading I have second guessed myself as some are saying it’s safe to also extend stay, in case they need to send back the application due to missed information (will no longer be implied status).
Should He also extend stay? And if He does extend stay do We have to wait until the extension is approved before sending sponsorship application, or can He send it while on implied status?.
I appreciate any help, thanks

Yes, he should apply to extend his stay as a visitor as a back-up. You can submit the PR app as planned, as the visitor app has nothing to do with it.
