Points:
  • 2 months before my PGWP was about to expire, I applied to extend my work permit.
  • However my PR was approved before my extended work permit application.
  • 1 month after my PR was approved, my extended work permit application was approved which I then returned to IRCC as I had no use of it.
  • Now in citizenship application it asks if I extended my work permit to which I answer yes.
    • For the section "Expiry date of extended status":
      • If I put the extended work permit expiry date - it complains: This date must be before the date you became a permanent resident.
      • If I put the date before I became a PR - it complains: Date must be after your status expired.
I am very confused as to what date to put. Can someone please kindly shed some light into this?

This appears to be unhandled edge case on IRCC's side. Did it anyone ever encounter this or knows the best way forward with this issue?

Should I incorrectly say "No" that I did not extend my work permit but add my documents and a letter of explanation if there is no correct way really?

Personally I'd put 'no' as you did not complete the extension of your work permit. I don't think there's anything problematic about this at all.

Thanks! Do you recommend I attach any LOE?
My own guess is that no, I do not think so.

But: you haven't clarified whether you are using any days from your pre-PR time in Canada. That might be relevant, and if so, perhaps a short LOE (just say you applied for the extension/work permit/whatever but PR was approved and received before the previous status expired).

I base this on my understanding that IRCC doesn't count out-of-status time prior to PR, and that they don't have the best records / know what to do with 'in-between' times (usually considered implied status - valid but ... they may not have records). So if you're using days from before your PR status began for physical presence - won't hurt to clarify that your previous did not expire before PR came through.

If you're not using days from before - personally I wouldn't even bother.

Thanks! Yes, I will be using my days before I became a PR. However I had no implied status, given I came as a student:
1. I got my original PGWP before my study permit expired.
2. And I got my PR before my original work permit expired.
3. I applied for my extended work permit before my original work permit expired and of course before I got my PR.
4. I got my extended work permit approved, after I became a PR.

Would you say I should still add a LOE?
