Hi everybody,

I am currently in the process of applying for my Family Class Sponsorship form for my wife (she is from Spain) and I myself am a born and raised Canadian. I have all the papers ready to go but I have not sent them to her to submit to the regional office in Paris, since she is applying from outside Canada, because it is quicker. She has to do a medical in Madrid on the 5th of November and I am not sure if I should tell her to postpone it. Here is the issue:

She tried to renew her passport in Spain she currently has approximately 8 months left on it, they won't renew it until she has 6 months or less on her passport which wouldn't be until the end of December. I have heard that you can just send a new copy of your renewed passport along with your old during the process.

The question ultimately is, what actually can be done correctly, legally & conveniently?

For me time is of the essence, 2 months won't make or break us, but after all it is almost a 10 month process, and I would prefer not to wait, but what are the risks? or the possibilities of messing this immigration process up because of this?

thanxs for reading and/or responding

If you want to expedite the process, she could conveniently lose her passport and apply for a new one. If it only has 8 months left it is pretty useless unless she is planning a trip over xmas even then depending on her return it may not be valid if less than 6 months left.

Good luck

I understand your wife is in Spain, but she should have filled out her papers, got her background checks, and done her medical and then mailed those to you, then you would go thru everything and add you application to sponsor her and other things you need copy of passport, birth certificate, option C etc... then you would mail it to CPC-M where the process would start with stage one sponsorship approval. then CPC-M would forward it to her VO in Spain. As for the passport you can send in the application now with her current passport, once she renews her passport and you have received sponsorship approval and received the application file number and your UCI number you can then send in the updated copy of her passport.

Hi!.
This will be an outland application. I would wait until it expires to renew it rather than "losing" it as that requires to file a police report.
When she receives the passport request in at least 6 months after you submit the sponsorhip, then she sends the new one.

Thanxs for all the replies guys,

gives me a lot of food for thought on what approach to take.

1) R151NG5UN: Oh, and about losing the passport, it doesn't matter the dates and everything are fixed in the system so even she lost it she would have it replaced with the same 8 months left :o

2) Creampop: Background checks? I assume you are talking about the police certificate, medical report, marriage certificate and such, plus the information written out on the application....

Quick question for you guys after reading the Police Criminal Record, "The certificate must have been issued no more than three months prior to submitting your application. If the original certificate is not in English or French, then you will need to submit both the certificate and the original copy of the translation prepared by an accredited translator."

My wife is a sworn translator and interpreter through the Spanish Government, I assume that would fulfill the accredited translator need??? ;D

thanxs again guys, you've been great, very helpful and informative. Lots to think about!

good day to you all! ;D

From my understanding, translating has to be someone who is NOT related to you or your wife in any way, so, no she can't. Sorry :(

what the heck does that matter, if she is a certified translator within Spain from Spanish to English and vice versa, that makes no sense. I could understand if she wasn't certified and just spoke English and Spanish....but this is different. :P

Basically, they don't want someone who is involved with the application and have anything to do with it and possibly fudge it. I know it's stupid, but I can understand why they would say that.

Even though you are applying from outside Canada you still need to send her part of the application along with yours to CPC Mississauga. Once sponsorship approval is granted her portion of the application will then be sent to her regional office.

With regards to R151NG5UN's note about "loss" of the passport, it could actually work. I don't think that they will provide her with a new passport valid for only 8 months. I lost my Irish passport a few years ago and applied for a new one and was granted a full 10 year passport. The length of time remaining on my old passport was not taken into account.

damn man, I almost forgot about the mississauga office, thanxs a lot! about the passport, she already asked...

I wonder if I can drop it off at the office instead of mailing it.... ;D

anyone know the deal on scanning items? what happens with them? like signed forms and scanning and emailing them in stead of sending them by mail.

no - that will not work, they need to be originals... so the best way is to prepare all the application, send everything to your spouse in Canada, and then send it to Mississauga. It takes a little more time, but a complete application is the best way to ensure a quick processing.

Sadly, dropping it off at CIC-M is a no no. I live a few hours away and looked into it myself :(
