To sponsor a spouse thru outland, does he have to leave Canada in the process of application? He is on a work permit til Nov 26, 2010.

no, he doesn't need to leave Canada. I stayed in Canada all the process through while being under outland sponsorship.

But if challenged by immigration (and with no work permit in place), how long *must* you be away before reentering for your next legal period of stay - I'm referring to an outland applicant from the US.
