Are you trying to do a PhD in EE? If you want to do a PhD in EE this issue will be that you don’t have a masters in EE so you’d likely have to apply for a masters to PhD program. Not sure you would qualify for a PhD in anything that falls under business with an MBA. What type of PhD would you do through the commerce department or business administration department? A PhD in finance, marketing, etc.? MBA does not necessarily lead to PhD like most masters programs. Is your current job a business consultant or are you working as a consultant in EE. What field of EE you want to pursue will also have an impact. Did you have backlogs with your EE degree? Your average is quite low so that can be an issue if you have a low GPA and lots of backlogs.

Hi, yeah i really wanted to do phd in EE/management and then try to settle in Canada, because otherwise i dont have funding to support myself in Canada, yes, currently i am associate consultant (its not related to EE, but its like general consulting job in Cloud technology), no i don't have any backlog in EE, i just have poor grades...I did not know that MBA does not lead to Phd, i was very keen of doing Phd in Management/ Quantitive analysis, strategy, EE domains...Not sure what to do now..looks like my TOEFL and GRE will go to waste..

Didn’t say that it was impossible to qualify for PhD but it is not a natural progression. Did your MBA specialize quantitative analysis? You mention and PhD in management and electrical engineering. Is there a PhD program in mangement/electrical emgineering In Canada? You mention you can’t Support yourself without without doing the PhD. Having funding to do a PhD is not guaranteed. Most PhD students can get some funding or get a job as a teaching assistant but that usually only partially covers costs. On the forum most who only provide proof of funding with no savings get denied.

Hi, no my MBA specializes in Finance (major), i was just interested in quantative analysis because i think i am good in maths/numbers...No, i meant to say that i am interested to do Phd either in EE related domain or management related domains...Yeah, i thought college waive off your whole school fees and also provide you with monthly stipend to survive in Canadian cities (living cost, food and all), this is what happens in US phd, not sure about Canada...What do you suggest..what should i do?? Is combined/integrated Masters+Phd program possible in EE, if it is possible, then will it be fully funded?? Or what else do you suggest..thank you..

In general Canadian PhD students don’t receive funding that will cover all their tuition and living expenses so you will need to plan on having some savings. Whether you get enough funding can also depend on whether get a teaching or TA job, whether you are offered a paid lab position, etc. Every student‘s situation and each school is different. There is no standard funding amount for each student like there is in some countries for example some European countries. Not all PhD students get enough funding to live on, pay tuition, afford travel home, etc. Many take out some loans, have a partner who is working, take on work on campus whether in a lab, TA, etc. Some schools have mature student housing which usually means access to more affordable housing. The top schools who have large endowment funds tend to be more generous when it comes to funding. If your supervisor has well supported research then that also can mean more generous funding, Funding is much more common for PhD students versus masters students. Most masters students don’t have funding. As a student you can usually work up to 15 hours during the school year and unlimited hours during breaks. That will cover part of expenses. You still need to show savings when applying for a study permit. If you don’t have a masters specializing in quantitive analysis normally you wouldn’t be able to get accepted to a PhD program in that field. A masters program that can be rolled into a PhD is usually possib,e although you should verify with the school and department. It is not as common as in the US where you can often enter a PhD/masters program from your bachelor‘s program. Would first suggest determining what type of PhD you are interested in and whether you have the prerequisites to qualify for that specific PhD program. You would then need to determine your research area of interest. Given your grades you would likely not get admitted to a top tier school so you would need to look into schools and determine look at whether there are potential supervisors in your area of interest and try to secure a potential supervisor. You should also contact the school and department to see what the average acceptance GPA has been in the past years. Acceptance always depends on what other candidates apply that year but you’ll have an idea about whether you have a good chance of acceptance. Many of the other students will have already done a masters in the field (not an MBA), may have published, etc.
