Is it possible to have the exams waived, providing that you prove the children are estranged? Has anyone been successful with this?

This is not uncommon. Include a brief, concise letter explaining the situation. I would also pay the associated fees for a dependent child, as the application could be based solely on the fact that you technically have a "dependent child" and have not paid the associated fees. These fees will likely be reimbursed once the application is being normally processed.
