Entering Canada when 35-36 weeks pregnant

Hi,

My good friend will be travelling to Canada (Toronto) when she is 35/36 weeks pregnant. Will she be allowed to enter? She is capable of paying all the medical bills, should the need arises to give birth there. What documents will she need to ensure an easy entry (apart from Visa)?

The airline may not let her board. Certainly she can be denied at all points of her voyage. She should be aware that traveling to Canada in the future will likely be denied if Canada discovers she gave birth in Canada. Don't support birth tourism so those are my comments.

I would be surprised if the airline would let her board the airplane without medical clearance, being so close to the 9th month of her pregnancy.

CBSA could deny her entry if they suspect that she is attempting to be a birth tourist.

35-36 weeks?? As others have stated, the first hurdle is the airline. But even beyond - does she really want to risk her child by traveling on a long international flight in that condition? I have a young baby too.. 35-36 weeks is not a time when you want to be traveling. So many things can go wrong at so many points, and I'm not talking about immigration issues, I mean medically.

Please try and counsel your friend.

No amount of documents or money can guarantee her easy entry simply because she wants to enter to be able to give birth in Canada. There is no logical reason for a woman that late into pregnancy to travel and seek entry in Canada. It will be hard to convince CBSA that she is a genuine tourist and can be turned away and sent back to her country.

As others have said, it will be up to the CBSA officer if she is allowed into Canada and there's a chance she may be refused entry and sent home on the next available flight. She should carry evidence that she can cover the cost of the delivery if it happens in Canada (e.g. bank statements). This means showing $10,000 at a bare minimum - but preferably significantly more to cover costs if there are any complications since costs can quickly skyrocket.
