Hello all,

As a newcomer to Edmonton I decided to create a Facebook group where we can all exchange information and help each other, maybe even arrange some gatherings. Please join the group and invite as many newcomers to the city as you can, or those planning to move here soon.

The group link is:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/493695310748431/

See you there,
Thalia :-*

Just sent a request for joining.

Thank you for joining, as well as the rest of you.
Seems like we are growing slowly slowly.

Why did you think of starting this group?

Well, I came here without knowing anyone or anything about Edmonton or Canada.
I tried to get some useful information about the city, but I found it hard to collect the info I really needed.
I hope that now I can help some people who are going through the same things I had to go through, and create a place where newcomers can help each other, ask questions or give answers, and make some friends on the way.

Nice thought!

Unfortunately there was a problem with the previous group link, so we had to move to a new one and loose all the info.

Please, all of you who are moving to Edmonton join this group, get help and help others.
Information will be added over time from members, and I will try my best with the things I've learnt so far here in the city.

I heard from some of my friends in Ontario that getting apartments/houses on rent is difficult without Job as the landlord ask for Job letter. Is it true in case of Edmonton/Calgary also.So in this case what needs to be done..
Regards
Edmonta

It's more or less the same all over Canada, but it's not only the lack of job. Especially if it's a building run by a company, then they usually ask for credit history; and all of us new to the country don't have any credit history to show.
Edmonton is not that hard or demanding, cause there is not as much demand as in bigger cities. People are nice and friendly and they understand when you explain them your situation. They do want though the rent to be paid with bank cheques, so if you sign a lease for e.g. 6 months, you will give upfront 6 cheques, each one dated on the 1st of each month (or the date when the lease starts). Of course there are always other ways if you have a really hard time, so if you really like a place and the landlord is reluctant, offer him to pay some months upfront if you can afford it.

South gate or Mill woods. Next week temp is going down to -30c. Better to come during summer time for the new comers.

There are many good and bad neighborhoods, but generally keep it north or south west. Avoid east of downtown, and too north or too south areas. And according to many articles and opinions Millwoods is one of the less safe neighborhoods. Well it's a matter of housing prices as well..my suggestion is stay inside the Yellowhead-Whitemud circle and concentrate in central, west areas on the city map (excluding Canora and Jasper Place though).
Oh, and welcome to Edmonton. March-April is a very good time to land. You won't get much snow and companies hire more during spring-summer rather than autumn-winter.
Join the group on FB and read some of the info I posted there about the city and first steps.

Hi Thalia! I'm hoping to take this big leap of faith by choosing Edmonton as my Point of Entry as a new PR coming from India. I've sent you a request on your facebook group.. Incidentally, this is my first post on this forum..

Any Chemists here in the oil sand industry?? AM hoping to get my toehold in lab based Chemistry jobs there.. Thanks for starting the thread here and on facebook.. There's a real dearth of info on Edmonton for a newcomer

Pls why is their delay on lmia, any body with useful information concerning to that?. Over 4months and it has not been approved. Still planning to come to canada by God grace
