I would really appreciate some help/advice on this if you can.........

My common-law husband is expecting his PR card in the post soon. He wants to visit me in Canada in a few months from the UK for a week or so, then return to the UK to work for 3 months before moving to Canada to settle permanently.

- Will he have to go through all the paperwork for PR when he gets to the border just for this visit?
If so, will he loose his PR if he returns to the UK to work for those few months then comes back to Canada?
- Or will he go through it when he moves permanently?

Thanks :)

You mean he is waiting for his PR visa and they have his passport right now? Once he has the PR visa, the next time he goes to Canada, he will do the landing formalities, give your address and his PR card will be mailed to your address unless he specifically tells them that he is only staying for a week, then they may hold it until he comes back permanently. During this week, he can also go to Service Canada and apply for his SIN card. It will also be sent to your address.

As a PR, he is allowed to spend up to 3 years in every 5 outside Canada so going back to work in the UK for a few months will not lose him his PR.
