Hey guys,
I am an international student here in Canada.
The thing is i dropped 2 courses in my January semester, and as they were prerequisite for the next semester and are only offered in Jan i had no other option than to sit at home and wait for Jan again, thats what i did and took only these two courses again in Jan.
Now long story short, i did not take the september semester at all and was a part-time student in Jan’s semester.
Can anyone please tell me where i am standing right now? What is my status? What would happen when i’d go to extend my study permit next year? Or even more when i’d apply for a PR?
Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks

So just for clarification are you saying you dropped 2 courses in January of one year then sat at home for a year without studying or working until the following January ? If so are you sure your study permit did not get cancelled for non attendance ?

I took the January semester as a full time student, i just dropped or actually did not pass those two courses. So i was a full time student till April, then it was summers so no semester was offered and then i did not take the September semester. So basically it was 1 semester only where i was not a student, and 2 (i.e 8 months) if you’re counting summers aswell.

I think technically when you didn't study for an entire semester you were no longer a student so your study permit should have been revoked, I think this depends a lot on if your school reported this skipped semester as an absence.

See these two pages from universities in Canada about skipping semesters and see which part applies to you.

You have definitely violated the PGWP conditions if you were planning on getting that as you are only allowed to take scheduled breaks off and be part time in your last semester so you wont get that if they apply the rules strictly.

Best bet is to talk to the international advisors at your school/get an immigration lawyer before applying for anything or just take a chance.

Is there anything now beside being a full time student for the rest of my studies which could help me cover up for what i did?

You should talk to a lawyer, this is too complicated for anyone here to give useful advise. Your biggest issue is getting study permit extension since you only had 90 days to apply for a change after going out of status, I do not know how strict they are in such situations though.
If you manage to get and extension I think the only thing for PGWP you can do is take another program after you finish/drop this one and apply based on that new program.
