I'm applying the first week of November. I get married in a couple weeks. I plan to land in a few months (beginning of next year), God-willing, if outland goes very smoothly.

My work doesn't know. I'm keeping hush-hush about everything. My imminent marriage. My plans to leave the country etc.

I'm afraid if I mention my future plans to ANYONE at work, my employer will catch wind, and begin making plans to replace me, well before I'm ready to put in my two weeks.

I'm just wondering, is anyone in a similar situation, or has been in a similar situation? I'm usually very open about my personal life, but I'm afraid if I tell them I intend to leave early next year, they'll let me go due to "budget cuts" or something (in other words, out of spite).

Is anyone else going through this whole process "under cover"? :-X

Not personally, but if you suspect your employer may respond in that way, you're absolutely right (in my opinion) to keep hush. I'm sure any real friends you have at work will understand you couldn't mention it in advance.

I didn't say anything until I was ready to give my notice.

I had to get the letter from my employer and they didnt ask why it was for... but if they had then I would have said it was for a credit application. No one figured it out.

Hi heather,

I'm curious, how did they respond to the news? Did they take it well, and were happy for you, or was it the opposite? I mean, I'd like to hope people will congratulate me, even my superiors, and that my getting married, and starting a new life elsewhere, overshadows the fact they'll need to find a quick replacement... though as you know, there's millions of people without work in the US, so that shouldn't be any amazing feat...

I worked for a great company, and was living in the US but am the Cdn sponsor so I was able to give lots of notice as I could return at anytime. They were happy for me and very supportive. I did give 5 weeks which was barely enough time for them to find a replacement and gave me very little time to write procedures for a lot of what I did and no time to train my replacement as they didnt start until 2 weeks after I left (high level administration job in a bank).
