Haha its cool. The best part is, because he makes $0 income, you will get the maximum possible tax credit from him.

yes! that's what they said at H&R Block and we are going back to claim for all 3 years '11, '12 and '13 so while its all a big pain in the backside....its all worth it in the end.

I just did my taxes last weekend, filing as married for the first time. My spouse is overseas, so I left the SIN # blank, reported his income, and claimed the spousal amount. I checked today and my return has already been processed, no issues.

Really, you don't need HR block. Just go to the CRA website, download one of the authenticated tax softwares (I used Genu tax). If you go with Genu Tax, definitely select the comprehensive interview. It takes you through step by step, asking you many questions, this way you are able to claim all credits you may be eligible for. Then submit it. It took me about 2 - 3 hrs.

Or you can go to one of the Volunterr Tax Clinics operated by CRA to get your taxes done for free. But you have to be below a certain income level to be able to use this service. Check the CRA website to see if you qualify.

I remember specifically too the agent at H&R block said because 90% of the year I was single that it "wouldn't make a difference" I had a feeling she was wrong

H&R block sucks. They have no clue. They screwed up my partners taxes in 2010 and 2011. So CRA was refunding him over $3000 last year because they found a mistake that H&R block made.

You better file your taxes online with TurboTax. It's easy and cheaper. It explains you step-by-step what to do. I filed our common-law taxes 2 months ago and it was really easy even with adding the first time home buyer stuff, medical expenses and so on.

I completely agree, they have made ridiculous mistakes on one of my family member's returns and have ZERO accountability once they get payment from you. And their hiring is really all over the place, they hire a lot of retired accountants who may not be totally up to date on stuff, especially immigration-related issues. And they are expensive! Netfile or Turbo Tax are great.
