Does it impact your record to contact police for help?

Hi there,

May I have your guidance to know the procedure about press charges in Montreal, Canada?

I was hit by my room mate who was hyper and aggressive. He raised his voice over me and also used abusive words. I called the police but police officer just warned him that if he repeat, they will hand cuff him and put in to detention. The alleged person admitted in front of police that he hurt me physically and feel sorry for that.

Being new here, I want to know that is it the way they you can punch some one, insult him and after words say sorry to compensate all of this?

Furthermore, does it impact me or my history by any means to report such issues to police; having in mind that I am sponsoring my family as a new immigrant (being Permanent Resident) ?. Because I have been told by some fellows that if I even seek help from police, it will create a file in the record........... Shocked

I will be obliged to have your guidance to escalate the issue further, please.

Contacting the police for help won't impact your record. Your sponsorship file will be fine.

Don't worry... it wont affect your file....
You could press charges and have him in jail for assault...
but police though that it was not going to be necessary...
It saves problems for you to have to go to court and for him
that will have a criminal record...
Nobody needs that. If he goes to jail the situation may escalate
in the future... So, the wise solution was the one that police offered

and apology,
and then letting him know that if there is next time he will go to jail.....

You may feel that he had to jail, but I agree with the police...
why you want to give him a criminal record and waste all that time
in court ? He wont hurt you again... If you press charges, then maybe
we would have a different story because he would resent the fact that
you put him in jail and nobody knows how he would act after....
