Can I show cheques payable to me/spouse as supporting documents for "sufficient funds"?

I do not think so, as cheques are not guaranteed forms of payment. When you try to encash the cheque there is no surety that there might be funds in the issuer's account. Hence, it would not be accepted.

Cheques cannot guarantee that the funds are there. They can bounce.
