Do you prefer writing an open-ended SOP or filling out a questionnaire?

As I've been looking into SP application procedures when applying from different countries, I wondered why their different at all? Why do residents of one country have the option of writing an open ended SOP/StudyPlan (e.g. Pakistan) but residents of another have to fill out a questionnaire (with limited spaces and limited topics that can be covered).

Which one do you guys prefer?

IMO the open ended option is better. You can show off your writing skills and make your case properly without limitation on quantity or content.
