I am currently living in Canada on a 2 year work permit which will expire in 1 month. My Canadian partner is sponsoring me as a common law partner, and I am confused as to whether or not I need to apply for a new open work permit in addition to this application. I'm also confused as to whether or not I will be able to keep working legally once my two year work visa expires. Can anyone explain this to me. I have read what is provided on government sites but am honestly still confused by the wording.

If you want to be able to continue working and remain in Canada legally, then you need to include an open work permit with the inland spousal / common law sponsorship application. The complete application (OWP + sponsorship) must be received by IRCC before your current work permit expires.

Ok thanks for the info. Do you how I could know if they've received it in time? What if it arrives to the building but noone looks at it for days or weeks due to being busy?

Received = arrived at IRCC's offices.

Assuming you send your application via courier, your courier will tell you when the application package was received / delivered (same thing).

Not sure if you can help me with this confusion too, but I've already paid fees for the sponsorship including an additional $155 fee for an OWP because it was all included in the fee paying step for the sponsorship application - which is submitted by paper.

Now it looks like that I'm going to have to do a separate OWP application online, and I feel like there is going to be a step telling me to pay $155 online with a credit card which I will not be able to get past without doing - even if I've already paid for it previously.

Do you have any idea if this is what I should expect or how it may work out for me?

Thank you
