Do I need an eTA?

I am a student from Brazil, I have a study permit and a student visa (S-1) that is valid until the end of 2021. I am planning to visit Brazil during the holidays and I want to know if I need an eTA in order to come back to Canada.

If you have a visa why do you need a eTA. eTA are for those countries which have visa free entry into Canada.

Probably your friend is correct even if you hold Temporary Resident Visa as per new rule you might need ETA. If you don't get firm answer I will suggest apply that its only $7

Brazil citizens are eligible for ETA

OK, if you got a Temporary Resident Visa with your study permit then you need not apply for eTA. Your TRV will allow you to enter and exit Canada.
