I am American and my husband, a Canadian citizen is working a temporary contract in Toronto. We plan to return to the States when his job is complete in October. I got a visitor's record in December 2013 at the the border. I had planned to apply for residency, but I withdrew my application when we decided that we were going to return to the States. My visitor's record expires June 14th. I wanted to extend it until October, but the application requires a lot of documentation and paperwork. To get the visitor's record, I only showed my passport and marriage license. I have read that extending it would give me status until a decision is made as long as I stay in the country, but I am headed back to the States in 2 weeks and that trip is not flexible. I am wondering if I should just leave on June 14th and return on the June 15th and then leave again as planned later this month and continue to come back and forth without a visitor's record, or just get a new one once this one expires.
