Hello Everyone,

I sponsored my mother 6 years ago and she has been living with us in Toronto ever since. About a year ago we found out that she has kidney failure and she recently started on Hemodialysis. I learned that if a person is on dialysis, she is considered disabled.

I was wondering if she applies for disability and receives money from Ontario, will I have to pay for that later? As I am financially responsible for her for 10 years, I wasn't sure if disability payments will track me back later.

Anyone had similar situation?

Thank you so much in advance for your responses.

Yes, as far as I have heard, disability payments are also collected from the sponsor. I have heard of a couple of cases of sponsored spouses going on disability as well as a sponsored parent. In the case of the sponsored parent, their ex son in law was liable for half of the money because he had co-signed on the sponsorship, even though he had since divorced their daughter.

Goes to show that sponsorship is serious business. Don't sign it unless you mean it.
