HI Guys,

Need help from those who know about this or are currently working in the US , commuting from Canada.

I have two things going on currently.
1. Awating PPR (Express etry- AOR June 16th)
2. Changing jobs in the US (moved close to Canadian border)

I wanted to knw oif I can decline the employer's coverage and instead negotiate higher salary. I wanted to now if we are eligible to get Canadian Health Insurance if we are commuting to work from US(weekely, not daily, if that matters)

Could you let me know if it is safe to decline(with hopes on Candian health insurance) or not?

THANKS VERY MCUH IN ADVANCE :)

How will you cover yourself while you're physically in the US? Canadian health care coverage will only cover you while you're physically in Canada. Without the US coverage, if something happens to you while you're in the US - you're on your own.

I know Alberta Health Care will cover some costs in the US, but it's limited to emergency services and only covers up to what they would pay in Canada. So if your trip to emergency in Calgary costs $700, but the equivalent in Detroit cost $12,200, you are on the hook for $11,500 in US hospital bills. And you pay up front. If they decide not to cover it you are " on your own" as Scylla pointed out. I wouldn't want to risk that......

Thanks Buletruck and Scylla. I was trying to see if I can save some money. But looks like its better I get the insurance here in the US itself. Thanks for the advice :)
