Current visa to expire before new one to be issued

Hi,

I'm currently in Canada and my visa will expire early April, however as the IEC for 2015 will not open until at least mid Feb I believe my current visa will expire before I will be issued a visa in the 2015 program. I understand I can stay in Canada but need to change my status to Vistior (how do I do this?) and during this time I'd be unable to work but otherwise it shouldn't be a problem? As anyone been in this situation and if so any advice?

Thanks for the link however as I'm travelling on a NZ passport, can I not just enter Canada as a Visitor at the POE?
