How far back do they want criminal records? If an applicant has convictions from over 20 years ago, are they relevant, or do they only want details of unspent history?

All the details are required by friend. Spent and unspent criminal issues if not you will be guilty of misrepresentation.

Hi There.
Thank you for your response.
Will convictions preclude my husband from obtaining a visa? He has some minor alcohol and Disorder convictions from the early 1980s and an Excess Alcohol Offence from 1992. All were dealt with by way of community based penalty and he has never served a custodial sentence. He has an offer of employment and we want to be sure his past mistakes will not impede our application. I am a person of good character.

Hi,

Here's the relevant page of the CIC website:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5312E3.asp

From this I understand it's 10 years back.

Don't ask me to interpret the details though, I'm not a lawyer ;D

Mummytl,

Please check your PM.

Shakira2009, the link given is instructive. Good one.
