can you please advise as to the process an american citizen would have to undertake in order to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident if he has a 20 year old criminal record for a minor offense...

he is american and dating a canadian and they are planning on wanting to live in Canada and they are looking at getting married soon

what does he have to do first in terms of being accepted into Canada considering that old criminal record.?

can you tell me the process

Here's all you need to know about criminal inadmissability.. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5312ETOC.asp

I am wondering if anyone has had a similiar experience. My husband, an american citizen, has a lengthy criminal record. His FBI certificate has five charges, the last one occuring in 1998. We hired immigration attorneys and spent THOUSANDS of dollars. We applied for a temporary resident permit so he would eb able to visit Canada as we have a son. Our lawyers alos prepared an applicaption for rehab for information purposes only and we are in the process of our spousal sponsorship.

Our TRP and Rehab applicaption was filed in June, 2011. In February 2012 we received a letter saying my husband was eliglibe for Rehab to send $800 more dollars because his case was deemed as serious criminality. I asked our lawyers what about the TRP. In any event, 22 months letter no answer at all on our TRP which I was told would take 6 to 9 months. Our lawyers told us because they are looking at the Rehab the TRP is on the side!!!!! This means my husband has not been able to visit our son in Canada at all. I have already been appoved as a sponsor on November 16, 2012 and our file says medical results received. Our lawyer says they will probably grant the Rehab and Permanet Residence at the same time.

Has anyone had their TRP not looked at by immigration.
Is 21 months not an extremly long delay for a Rehab.
Has anyone received their REhab and PR at the same time.

We are discouraged, frightened and wish we would just know what is next. I feel like our lawyers took our money and now we are left with unanswered questions.
