Criminal conviction and immigration

Hi there, i live in alberta canada and im legally married to a canadian citizen (took place in alberta) ive been here for 2 years and i have legally adopted her daughter. Recently i was charged with an indictible assault charge and its currently going through the courts but can take up to 12 months to be resolved. I have my citizenship application in already and its still in processing. My lawyer has told me i will probably get probation and have to go to councilling but how will this effect my status/application etc. Ive ready conflicting information everywhere as i am legally married and legally adopted parent as well.

I am a UK citizen as well.

Can anyone with relevant experience give me any advise?

Your question may be flawed. As you have been in Canada for 2 years, I don't think that you really mean a *citizenship* application. Please recheck and clarify.

Do you mean you have your permanent residence application in process? You have to be a permanent resident for at least 2 years and have 1095 days of physical presence in Canada in the 4 years preceding the application.

An assault charge is a big deal. You should seek legal advice from an immigration lawyer as well because depending on the sentence you get, it could impact your application. A criminal conviction for which you haven't received a pardon could make you inadmissible to Canada.
