Pretty much, I applied and it has been sent to Ottawa (as usual) for stage 2. I live in Chicago so the part of the application that asked of my closest Canadian embassy, I put Detroit location. Now I am wondering what next as I wait for my approval. Will my passport be requested to be mailed or will they allow me go in with my passport? I ask because when my husband did it (he was an inland applicant though), he had to go to the Detroit office in person (from Toronto, he also had the option to mail it in but he preferred to go in himself) to get it and of course it was done in one day.

So I wonder if it would be different for us (outland applicants), I am really not looking forward to mailing out my passport and being rendered "not being able to travel out indefinitely" because that will mean I cant visit my husband until I get it backs...that will sorta suck.

Anyone had a similar situation? how did it go?

Did they confirm it went to Detroit? My application stayed in Ottawa despite what location I requested.

Thanks for your reply.
That is what I am saying: They sent it to Ottawa so I am wondering if it would mean Ottawa would request my passport for my visa. What was your case?

There are two possibilities:

Ottawa may complete the processing of your application. They were granted the authority to issue visas as of Nov 27 so this is increasingly likely what will happen (they are aiming to only forward complicated cases that need additional assessment). So far, CPP-O has been asking applicants to e-mail in a scanned copy of their passport bio page and then mailing the CoPR to the applicant directly.

The other option is that CPP-O forwards your application to a visa office in the US. Depending on workloads, this may or may not be the visa office you asked for. If no interview is required, they may ask for you to mail in your passport and then mail you your passport back with the CoPR. If you have travel planned you can always reach out to them via a case-specific enquiry to let them know and ask them if would accept a scanned copy of your passport (for visa exempt countries, it is the Officer's discretion).

For now, monitor your e-mail and check your spam periodically since that is the likely next point of contact.

I thought they only ask you to mail scanned copies if it is a particular type of passport? Or is this done for all kinds of passport? It's just sad that there is a possibility of being without my passport "indefinitely" with this whole process. I usually visit my husband every 2 weeks and I am thinking this mailing in passport idea will disrupt my travels plans..worst part is that the timeline seems to not be "definite" enough. Brrrr.
Thanks for your input guys.

Ours stayed in Ottawa and we just had to send in a scan of the passport via email.

I added a bit more context to my prior post that may help. Basically, folks from visa-exempt countries (including the US) no longer have to have a visa affixed to their passport so you don't HAVE to mail it in. However, certain visa offices (like LA) have been asking folks to mail it in so there's a chance they will ask you for it. That being said, if you share your travel plans with them they may allow you to submit a scanned copy. Lots of maybe's, I know ... but it's up to the Officer how they want to verify your name, etc before issuing the CoPR.

Do you have a passport card?

No.
I just reside in the US (H1B visa) but I am not from the US.
I am actually from Nigeria so I am sure that is not a visa-exempt country :(

Well then, unfortunately, you will most likely need to mail in your passport to get the immigration visa placed in your passport. That just means your husband will need to visit you :) He can help you pack while he's there too!

LoL!
That really sucks but i guess seeing it from that point of view may not be that bad.
