Hello there, I've just seen the news about the altered skilled worker requirements, but it hasn't helped with my confusion.
I am a freelance translator (with an existing solid flow of international clients) who would love to move to Canada. But when I used the Come to Canada "calculator" at the beginning of this year, it indicated that I would not be eligible unless I had a job offer (which I don't actually want as I'm very happy with my existing clients). So I didn't bother to apply at that point.
Now I look at the revised regulations, and they indicate that I would possibly be eligible (68 points at least, possibly a minimum number of additional points for basic French and spousal adaptability). So I went back to see how many points I would have got under the last system and it seems like I would have been even stronger at 72 at least. So I'm not quite sure why the Come to Canada calculator was rejecting me?
My mother tongue is English, I have a PhD, and 14 years of work experience as an economist. It seemed to me that the calculator was rejecting me because my profession was not on the priority list, yet what I'm seeing now is that you just have to have (at a minimum) experience in a NOC-classifed occupation, which I do. (I'm now a translator as I made a radical career change last year.)
I'd love to know what I'm missing vis a vis the existing system, ie. why it rejected me, so I can have an idea of how I would be placed under the new system. Can anyone enlighten me? Above all, if anyone can point a way for me to move to my beloved Canada, I would be forever grateful!
