Hello,

I would like to discuss and get inputs on my query about marrying after PR.

I got my PR recently and will be completing my landing procedure in a couple of months. I am an Indian citizen and working in Norway and have been to the US before for work and studies. I still have a valid student visa for the US.

I am dating my girlfriend and we are talking about marriage and there is a chance we might go through with it in the coming months. She is a non-muslim Pakistani citizen who has traveled to the US in the past and holds a valid US student visa but currently working in Karachi.

I have been reading a lot of info and the way I understood was that one of the plans is that we apply for Outland Sponsorship, post which I apply for her Visitor Visa and she comes and stays with me until her PR decision comes through. But since the outland these days takes 12 months, she will have to come back when her visit visa is expired which is not something I would want.

Another plan is that she applies for Visitor Visa while on the job, goto Canada and then apply for Inland Sponsorship and stays with me until we hear the decision.

Now I have a couple of queries if we go through this route:

  • Is Inland Sponsorship the best way out here? We don't mind waiting longer as long as there is a higher chance of success.
  • Since I am currently working in Norway, I will be moving to Canada for good next year after some job hunting and I would like us both to travel together. In this case, does she confess to CIC the intention of applying Inland in her Visitor Visa application? Cos we will be traveling together.
  • Does this confession put her Visitor Visa at risk?
Also, lets say I land and complete the procedure and come back to Norway and then get married while my PR card is being processed. Should I notify CIC? If yes, what happens then? Will that put my PR in jeopardy?

Would really appreciate some expert opinions on this!

Thanks!

If you want to move together the easiest thing would be to get married, notify CIC and then resubmit your application so she can be included. There is no guarantee that she will be granted a TRV so you have to be happy also having to sponsors her outland. Both take approx 12 months. The key thing is that you can't get married and then land. You would never be able to sponsor her in that case.

You can get married before you land you just have to resubmit your application. That is the easiest way to enter Canada with your spouse.
Yeah I understand. But marrying her before landing will not work because we plan to get married in Norway and the fiance visa takes about 4-5 monhs.

Do you think CIC will grant me an extension of COPR/landing if i tell them that I plan to get married by the year-end?
