Hello everyone,

I have yet another question for the the lovely common law application. On the form for sponsor, sponsorship agreement and undertaking...question number 8 asks about the date on which we entered into a commonlaw relationship. My boyfriend and I have already been together for almost 2 years but by the time we apply will have only lived together in Canada for 1 year. Is the date I am supposed to put supposed to be when we first started living together or is it when our full year is complete?

Thanks for your help in advance!!

The date you hit one full year of living together is when you became common law.

The date I put down there was the date when my sponsor and I moved in together.

The sponsored spouse/partner questionnaire has a question about when you and your sponsor first met and entered a relationship.

This is answered in Guide 3900 on the CIC site! http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900ETOC.asp

"Question 8
b.Enter the date (year, month, day) you were married or you entered into your current common-law relationship.

Note: This is the date your status officially changed from being single to common-law, not the date you started living together."

I stand corrected.

I still put down the date when my sponsor and I moved in together on our application... :D

The date asked for is when did they become common law. That would be the date after living together 1 year, not when they moved in together and not when they began their relationship.

Thank you thank you thank you. Man all these details are confusing!! I am sure I will have more questions on the way!!! Cheers!

Read the guides supplied on the CIC website. The 3900 one i linked to helps answer specific inquiries like this with easy to understand side notes on the questions. I know they're long and tons of info... but worth it to browse through!

I put the day that was exactly one year after we moved into our first apartment together.

How are you living in Canada with him? I want to move with my boyfriend but he is in the Army and doesnt make enough for me to go without a job. Is that how you are there for a year? Or are you working there?

My boyfriend is living with me in Canada because he is from Belgium and was able to get a Holiday working visa so we could live together for a year in Canada and he could work here is well. Since that is only temporary though he now has to go back to Belgium while I sponsor him. Hope that helps katester.
