I am a Chinese citizen, currently an undergraduate student in New York. I got accepted by a University for pursuing my Master degree in Accounting after I graduate from here in December 2011. This program starts in September 2012. However, the program requires me to finish 5 prerequisite courses before it starts so that school also registered me for those 5 courses as an upgrading undergraduate student starting from January 2012 to Spring 2012 term.

In this case, the offer I got for the Master degree program is conditional which requires me to finish those courses before it starts in September with the grades above 75%. At the same time,I am waiting for the other admission letter for being an undergraduate student for the five prerequisite courses starting in January 2012.

My questions are:

1. If the prerequisite course is about 6 months, and the admission letter for the Master program starting in September next year is conditional and I will only meet the conditions after I finish those five courses, should I only apply for the temporary resident visa at this point or should I also apply for the study permit for the Master program at the same time even it is a conditional offer?

2. If the admission letter for the prerequisite course study is longer than 6 months (Since I haven't received the other admission letter yet, I am not sure whether the terms (winter+spring) will be longer than 6 months or not. possibly around 6 or 7 months), should I apply for the study permit for that period only or also for the master program together?

I just don't know if the conditional offer is eligible to apply for the study permit at this point.

Thanks a lot!

So, you are a Chinese Citizen, currently an undergraduate student in New York, great.

With conditional offer you can not apply for the study permit

1. You have to do prerequisite course .

2. Your University will tell you the duration of Prerequisite course.

Best Wishes :)

Hi,

I think your pre-requisite course + Master Degree is a part of one process. And you have to clear Pre-requisite courses before you ‘continue’ for Masters. I can give you one example, University of Regina (in Canada) offering MBA with 5 or 6 pre requisite courses for non-business background students with the condition that such students MUST pass all pre-requisite courses with 70 percent average marks before they continue MBA program. In case they failed, they MUST withdraw. But all these required pre-requisite courses are part of daily classes and students start classes in around July (two months prior to the actual MBA classes).

I am not sure if you have to clear your pre-requisite courses by your own (before coming to Canada) or by attending daily classes. If it’s a part of daily class thn of course you can apply for full study permit (covering both Pre-requisite courses + Master degree). Study permit can be issued on conditional letter of acceptance (it’s not a new thing, in fact very common for Master level students).
