Hi all,
I live in Germany and desperately need to go to Canada to help my brother in law. I am applying for Compassionate Exemption, but am not sure what a “critical medical condition” is, and if I will be granted this exemption. My brother in law has aggressive bowel cancer and started long-term chemo this week. Is this a strong enough reason? How long does this Compassionate Exemption application take? If anyone could share their timelines and sucessful application reasons I would be extremely grateful! Thank you in advance!

I have attached the forms but your brother needs his doctors to fill out information. Are you fully vaccinated? Even if you are vaccinated you are unlikely to be able to enter a hospital and you shouldn’t be around your BIL until you have isolated from him and his close contacts for 10-14 days to make sure you haven’t caught covid during your travels. You mention it is your BIL. Where is your sister? Assume your BIL may have at least some support so that is also evaluated. Are you German? If not where are you from and what’s your status in Germany? Do you have a visa already to enter Canada? It may be easier to wait and travel when the entry requirements change on September 7th if you are from a visa exempt country.

i am fully vaccinated and have an eTA. I am a German citizen. This is my husband’s brother. He is there with his wife and two small children, and they are having a hard time due to his Chemo and my sister in law being alone taking care of the kids andcaring for him alone. That’s the reason we wanted to come and help (bith me and my husband). We filled out the form, and the doctor will fill it out this evening (daytime in Canada), so I am expecting to submit it later today. I just don’t know how long the assessment would take, until I get an answer. Any idea?

Impossible to know. You and your husband will need to isolate for 10-14 days (doctor can advise) because you risk exposing him or his family to covid if traveling to get to Canada since vaccinations don’t prevent infections they just lessen the chances of you ending up in hospital. If your BIL caught covid it would be extremely bad.

and do you know if and eTA and an accepted Compassion Exemption are enough to enter Canada?
