My partner (PA) and I (sponsor) will be applying outland common-law sometime next March/April. We have been living together since March 2020, and met back in 2016 while studying in the same University. He is now doing his master's degree and I'm working. We are an interracial couple as he's from Bangladesh and I'm Chinese Canadian. I am just a bit worried, do you think being interracial would raise any red flags? Also, I have not yet met his family in Bangladesh as we were just students from 2016-2019 and did not have that much money to travel and were planning to go this year but Covid happened. However, he has met my family and we even have photos together. I just wonder if it would be a problem if I have not yet met his family and they would refuse our application because of this... Hoping for some insight, thanks !

No, no-one cares. It would be better if you met his family etc but just explain the circumstances. If you are living in Canada, you can show that your family and froends have met him and that you are a couple in every sense. Pay close attention to what kinds of proof are needed to show you started living together.

Note that it will likely take closer to a year to process his PR, you may wish to consider getting married and apply earlier. Based on your dates above, you could be looking at March 2022 or even later to complete the process.

Thanks for your reply armoured. We are not going to get married yet as we are still quite young and just finished university :D ! We are not in Canada now, we are living together outside of Canada, hence the outland sponsorship. And yes, because of the situation now everyone's application is getting delayed, we are prepared for the process to complete in March 2022 or later.

Ah, out of country. Still won't change much, hopefully your families will be able to meet in due course.

Your choice about marriage, but in many respects being common law carries similar obligations to being married (including for you as sponsor when in Canada).
